Parental involvement and participation is essential to the success of a child's education, as the influence of the home directly impacts the student’s well being and academic motivation.
York Preparatory Academy's charter is written to ensure a high level of parental involvement. Parents will be essential actors in the growth, accountability and overall success of YPA. In addition to the Governing Board, the school depends on parental participation in leadership teams and standing committees to ensure the school reaches its goals and objectives.

It has come to our attention that many of you are no longer receiving YPA email blasts and newsletters. After reviewing our contact database and email marketing software, we have discovered that many YPA emails are being sent directly to spam/junk folders. This appears to be a particular problem for those with comporium.net email addresses. Please add

When schools, families, and communities work together, students are motivated to succeed.
Because of this proven principle, parents are required to attend parent-teacher conferences on a regular basis. Teachers will be flexible to allow conferences to be held at times and dates convenient for parents. We want parents to receive an accurate picture of their child's progress and have a personal vehicle for providing input. Students will participate in conferences, also. Together, parents, teachers, and students will establish learning goals, and develop a true partnership and sense of ownership for success. |

The operating hours of YPA will tentatively be 8:15am to 3:15pm for all grade levels. Before and after school programs will be determined based on the interest of YPA enrolled students. YPA hours of operation offer convenience for parents of multiple children to return to the campus at one scheduled time to drop off and/or pick up all children at once as well as cut down on expenses relating to operating bus
es.
Monday will include a 2 hour reserved block for quarterly extracurricular activities and enrichment programs. Parents and local community members are urged to volunteer their skills and expertise as cultural, training and learning opportunities for YPA students. Students may be released at this time if they do not wish to attend the extracurricular activities and enrichment programs.

The YPA Charter Committee consists of teachers, parents, and community members that will steer the charter school through the application process, planning & construction, and the first year of operation. The election of the Governing Board will occur in February 2010 and the Charter Committee will then be dissolved handing over all responsibilities to the elected Governing Board. |
|
YPA is guided by a Governing Board that is elected annually by the staff and parents or guardians of enrolled students. Members of the Governing Board may include parents, staff members, teachers and community members. The Governing Board will consist of seven elected members with voting rights as well as non-voting/ex-officio members. The governing Board will be re-elected annually.
The Governing Board has the authority to develop policies, make decisions and execute each of the following responsibilities:
- Employee agreements and contracts with Principal, teachers and non-teaching employees
- Ensure that all certified personnel and non-certified teachers undergo background checks and other investigations before they are employed in the school
- Contract for additional services, including but not limited to transportation, financial, food, accounting and legal
- Develop pay scales, performance criteria, and discharging policies for its employees, including the school’s administrator
- Deciding all other matters related to the operation of the school, including budgeting, curriculum, and operating procedures
- Ensure that the school will adhere to the same health, safety, civil rights, and disability rights requirements as are applied to all public schools operating in the same school district
Non-Voting/Ex-Officio Members
The school's Managing Director and at least one teacher from the Primary (K5-1), Intermediate (2-3), Transitional (4-5), Middle School (6-8), High School (9-12) and Special Service areas will be ex-officio members of the Governing Board with the responsibility of providing educational knowledge, data, and information to help the Governing Board make informed decisions.
|
|
The Leadership Team consists of parents, teachers, instructional support staff, and community members who work with the school's Managing Director to ensure everyone has opportunities to accept responsibilities and contribute to the school's success. This Leadership Team enables all staff and parents to be highly involved in decisions that affect the school. In collaboration with the Managing Director, the Leadership Team will recommend to the Governing Board adjustments and improvements for the educational program of the school as well as its budget and operational procedures. |
|
Participation by the broader school community will occur through the work of Standing Committees. Each standing committee will work to develop the foundations for which the school will be based, being careful to collaborate with the Charter Executive Committee or Governing Board as a whole for approval and/or recommendations.
The Standing Committees include:
- Academic Committee
- Business Committee
- Facility and Maintenance Committee
- Public Relations Committee
For a detailed description of each Standing Committee, please read more.
