York Preparatory Academy sought out and recruited teachers who are patient, caring, and passionate about their profession. The importance of gaining these teachers who understand their responsibility to provide a high level of support, structure, and guidance for students and parents alike during the learning process is critical to YPA's success. YPA's emphasis on teacher empowerment, parental and community involvement will create a rewarding environment for teachers, parents, students and the community.
Teacher Development
YPA schedules will include a significant amount of time for teacher planning and professional development. YPA views meaningful professional development as integral to the act of teaching. Without increased time for professional development linked to the curriculum, teachers cannot acquire the knowledge and skills they need to help all students perform at high levels.
As the What Matters Most (1996) report by The National Commission on Teaching & America’s Future noted, investments in teacher knowledge and skills net greater increases in student achievement than other uses of an education dollar.

Hello, my name is Heather Coccia and I am thrilled to be a part of the YPA staff. I am the second and third grade lead teacher and also a third grade classroom teacher. Formerly I taught in the Horry County School District (Myrtle Beach). I have had experience teaching grades second all the way through fifth. Teaching a variety of grade levels helped me to truly understand the academic standards students would be responsible for the following school year and gave me a distinct insight into each stage of academic development. I have high academic standards for all of my students believing that each child is uniquely gifted. I am excited to meet your child and discover their special gifts and talents here at YPA.
Not only am I a teacher at YPA, but I am also a parent of children attending YPA as well. My son will be in second grade and my daughter will be in kindergarten. From the time my family and I first were told about a “new charter school“ coming to Rock Hill, we have been on board. Two years ago when YPA first began I was on the planning committee and I have watched the dream of giving children a better education and exceptional learning experience come to a reality.
I am excited to be on this journey with all of you as both a parent and as a teacher. I look forward to getting to know you and your children better and appreciate the time and effort all of you have put into what is going to be a very exceptional school….York Preparatory Academy!

We currently have ALL 42 members of the YPA Staff under contract or committed with Letters Of Intent (LOI). The YPA webpage has each of these new faculty with their accommodating pictures and bios as they have been made available. The Board has approved each of these candidates with a unanimous affirmative vote as they have been presented over the past four months. We have local candidates and some from long distances, yet all of these new YPA additions are Highly Qualified to teach and have been through a rigid hiring process that consisted of a prescreening, assessment screening, interviewing sessions, background checks, and an application process. This summer, each of these faculty members will go through training and orientations to get them up to speed as to what the YPA culture is all about: high parental and community involvement, high academic standards, high behavioral expectations, high levels of project-based learning, and a high value on the individual learner. We are excited to move forward with these highly passionate and eager teachers!
